Both father involvement and coparenting behavior have been linked empirically to children’s socioemotional functioning ( Lamb, 1997 McHale et al., 2002). Although there is a long research tradition focused on studying family influences on children’s development, only relatively recently have researchers broadened this effort beyond the study of mother-child or marital relationships to include a focus on other important aspects of the family system such as father involvement, or the degree to which fathers are involved in childrearing, and coparenting behavior, or the extent to which adults in the family support versus undermine each other’s parenting. It is increasingly understood that children’s social development in the family context is best conceptualized as a process in which all family members - including mothers, fathers, siblings, and extended kin - are considered to play important roles. ![]()
